Currently I go to our garden every day to pick strawberries. I love this time a year, when I wake up in the morning and first thing I do is go to our garden to pick fresh fruit and veg. Did you know that strawberries have loads of health benefits? And they are great for weight loss as they are low in calories.

1. High in Fibre

Fibre is needed for healthy digestion and is something that is too low in many people's diets. The average person only has about 15g of fibre a day when they need 25-40g. Strawberries contain 2g of fibre in about 8-9 strawberries.

2. High in Vitamin C and other nutrients

About 100g (8-9 Medium Strawberries) will give you nearly your daily requirement for Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a very important nutrient that boosts your immune system and is also an antioxidant which can help reduce your risk of cancer.

3. Low in Calories and carbohydrates

100g of Strawberries only contains 33 Calories and about 8g of carbohydrates (2g of these are fibre). This makes strawberries a fantastic food for diabetics (because of the amount of fibre and low amount of carbohydrates it contains) and people trying to lose weight.

4. Reduce Inflammation

Inflammation can lead to diseases like arthritis and heart disease. One of the main causes of long term inflammation is a poor diet (high in refined carbohydrates, sugars etc). Strawberries are full of antioxidants and other nutrients which can help reduce inflammation.

5. Good for your Skin

Your body produces collagen which is needed to keep your skin healthy and wrinkle free. As we get older we do not produce as much collagen and that is why we get wrinkles. Strawberries contain Ellagic Acid and Vitamin C which are both needed for collagen production. This can help us produce collagen and reduce wrinkles.

Strawberry season is here so enjoy them while they are fresh. You can use them in smoothies, have them with yoghurt and cinnamon, eat them with porridge or dip them in dark chocolate! If you have any great strawberry recipes then share them here.
