Why you should start a habit

What does habits have to do with health and fitness? The answer is they have everything to do with it. Habits can be good or bad and once we form one it can be very difficult to stop. If you try and create new healthy habits in your life you will be amazed at the changes and how easy they can become which means you easier achieving your goals. To help you here are some tips on how to create new, healthy habits that you can start today!

Do one habit at a time

Don't try and do too many new things at once otherwise you will overwhelm yourself. Too many people try and make too many changes to their lifestyle all at the same time. Pick one or two new things a week to focus on.

Choose easy habits first, start off small

Don't say you are going to run 5 miles every morning if you have never run before. Keep your first new habits simple and gradually make them more difficult

Choose something measureable

Don't say something like 'I am going to get fitter'. Actually set yourself a goal and a habit you can measure. For example: I am going to take the stairs instead of the lift every day.

Be consistent

Keep your habits at the same time every day or week and it will become part of your routine. This will make it easier to keep. For example if your habit is to go running everyday, go running at the same time every day.

Here are some examples of healthy habits you can start today:

  • Eat breakfast every day
  • Eat 5 portions of fruit & vegetables every day
  • Drink 1.5-2 litres of water every day
  • Get 8 hours of sleep every night
  • Take the stairs instead of the lift
