You should enjoy your holiday

Often I hear "I am looking forward to my holiday but I am not looking forward to not having my healthy lifestyle" or "I am going to put weight on holiday again". It doesn't have to be like this, you don't have to look at holiday as something you are afraid of. That is why I have a few tips for you how to stay fit on holiday.

1. Follow simple eating rules

Trying the local food and having treats is all part of your holiday. I love trying new dishes when I am away and I especially love trying local desserts! The important thing to remember is eating in moderation. Most of the time I try to eat whole foods for most meals (things like fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, fresh meat or fish). This means when there is a treat that I want to try then I can (I just make sure I don't have it for every meal!). The other thing I do is I make sure I have normal portion sizes. I don't need to have a large helping of every food to try it and enjoy it.

2. Try local markets

Most of the time when I travel I go to the local markets or try the street food. I find this is normally where you get the freshest food (I love the fresh fruit and vegetables I find on holiday) and it is usually cheaper than eating in restaurants! I also find it a great way to see how the locals live.

3. Do activities

When I go on holiday the last thing I want to do is spend every day in the gym! Instead I do sports and activities to enjoy myself. If I am near the sea I will try swimming, surfing or diving. On the beach I will play volleyball or football (though not very well!), if I am in the countryside I will go hiking or skiing. And if I am in town I will walk as much as possible. Walking is great exercise and it means you get to see a lot more of a new city than if you are in a bus or tram (it is also a great way to get lost and see places that aren't in the guide book).

4. Have fun

This is your holiday and it is important you enjoy it. Being able to relax and have fun is an important part of staying healthy. You did not travel to a new country just to spend the day in the gym and eat the same food you eat at home. By keeping active and enjoying your food in moderation you can have a great time and not worry about staying fit!
